Giver away

Note from KL:

How many of you, like me, have thought about donating your hair to organizations that make wigs for cancer patients but have just never gotten around to doing it?

Well, I encourage you to make the effort. A little over a year ago I decided to grow my hair out so I could participate in the Pantene Beautiful Lengths hair drive. There are lots of organizations to choose from, including Locks of Love, but I chose this one because they only asked for eight inches of hair rather than ten. When you're growing your hair out, that's a big difference!

I figured now was the time because pretty soon I'd have more than the five percent of gray hair that is the maximum you can have. They don't say this to discriminate against older people, by the way. Gray hair can be very beautiful, but since it takes several pony tails to make one wig they need hair that will dye evenly, and gray hair doesn't.

Anyway, once I made the decision I waited and waited and waited for my hair to be long enough. Just before Christmas I finally made the cut. As per the instructions, I'll mail my clean, dry, undyed ponytail to:

Pantene Beautiful Lengths
511 Wisconsin Drive
New Richmond, WI 54017-2613

This was a really fun long term project. Every time I complained about how difficult my long hair was getting to manage or worried about what it would look like short, I thought about the kids and adults who had no control over the loss of their hair, and what that would mean to a person.

Also, hair donation is not just for females... a wonderful guy I know who is a body builder at my local gym donated his hair and he gave way more than I did.

Here are some before and after pictures from the big cut. I hope they inspire you to make this commitment even if it's just once in your life!

The Big Cut!

There it goes.

Of course, I need a style -
so here's Sean hard at work.

Extreme close up!

Almost done.

Here's the end product - I love it. It feels awesome to have short hair again. And even better that I could help someone else in the process.
